Most nights out in the Arts District are about a DJ behind the decks. This one is about the records. On Tuesday, November 10, a fan-run crew is turning a warehouse space on Mateo Street into a listening room for the music of Black Coffee, the South African producer who helped carry Afro House to dance floors around the world. It is free, and it is a fresh angle on EDM in Los Angeles for a weeknight.

When: Tuesday, November 10, 8 PM to 1 AM Where: Arts District Downtown Los Angeles, 802 Mateo Street, Los Angeles, CA 90021 Price: Free Tickets: DICE

What to expect

The organizers describe the night as an immersive listening experience rather than a standard party. Sound, lighting, visuals and atmosphere are designed together, so the room itself becomes part of the set. The program is a walk through the sounds that shaped Black Coffee's career and brought South African Afro House to audiences everywhere.

Plan on a relaxed, music-first crowd. People come to hear a catalog played loud on a proper system, trade favorites and dance if the groove calls for it. If you know the big Afro House anthems, you will recognize the territory. If you do not, this is an easy way to learn it.

The listing is clear on one point: Black Coffee will not be performing, appearing or attending. This is a fan-driven tribute to his music and artistry, not a Black Coffee DJ show. Set your expectations accordingly and you will have a better time.

The flyer bills the location as a secret warehouse, and the DICE listing places it in the Arts District with the address above. Free events can fill up, so arriving early is a good idea. Check the DICE page for any updates on entry and the exact doors time before you head out.

Getting there

Mateo Street sits in the industrial heart of the Arts District, east of Alameda and close to the LA River. Street parking fills up fast on busy nights, so budget extra time or use a rideshare, which also makes the late finish easier. The Little Tokyo/Arts District Metro stop is a rideshare hop away for anyone coming in by train.

If you are building a week around things to do in Los Angeles, a free Tuesday night of Afro House in a warehouse is an easy pick. Come for the music, stay for the atmosphere, and pair it with dinner at one of the neighborhood's restaurants beforehand. More nights like this are collected on our EDM page and the Downtown LA guide.
