Who is DJ Quik

DJ Quik is a Compton-born producer, rapper and DJ whose records have shaped the funk-heavy, bass-forward style that Los Angeles hip-hop is known for. He is as much a beatmaker as a front man, which is why his live sets lean on the groove: deep catalog cuts and the kind of crowd call-and-response a hometown audience knows by heart.

A DJ Quik night is not a festival-style EDM bill, so don't expect a lineup of trance headliners. What you get is one of the city's own producers working a downtown room. For anyone mapping out EDM in Los Angeles beyond the club circuit, it is a reminder that dance floors here have always had a hip-hop and funk lineage.

What to expect at The Novo

The Novo sits inside the L.A. Live complex downtown, a music venue that regularly books touring hip-hop, pop and dance acts. The source listing does not name an opening act or a set time, so check the Ticketmaster page for any updates before you go.

Practical info

• Price: The listing we checked did not publish a price. Open the Ticketmaster page for current tiers and fees.
• Getting there: The venue is on Olympic Blvd in the South Park area of downtown. The Metro A and E lines stop at Pico station, a short walk away. Parking garages around L.A. Live fill up fast on show nights, so book a spot early or take rail.
• Plan the night: Dinner options cluster around L.A. Live, and arriving early helps with the entry line.
