There aren't many artists who can claim they invented a genre. The Egyptian Lover is one of them, and he's playing Zebulon on New Year's Eve, December 31, 8 p.m. to midnight. Presale tickets are $32. It's 21+.
The Egyptian Lover
Greg Broussard has been making electro since the early 1980s. His 1984 single "Egypt Egypt" is a direct ancestor of every club-ready drum machine track that came after it, that snap, that echo, the way the bass hits in a chest-rattling pattern while Broussard half-raps, half-seduces over the top. He was one of the first artists to put LA on the map as a place where hip-hop and electronic music fused into something new.
Forty-plus years later, he still records and performs. His 2016 album 1984 was a love letter to the Roland 808 that held up completely as club music. He's not a nostalgia act dusting off old records, he's still working in the same space, with the same machines, refining a sound that the rest of the music world caught up to decades after he built it.
Zebulon
Zebulon is a café-concert space in Atwater Village, at 2478 Fletcher Drive. It's small and personal, and it doesn't over-program. The room holds maybe 200 people comfortably, which means a New Year's Eve show here is a specific experience, not a festival crowd, not a club with six stages, but one room, one artist, at midnight.
That intimacy is the point. You can actually see the DJ from wherever you're standing.

Zebulon sits off the 2 freeway between Los Feliz and Glendale. Street parking is available on Fletcher Drive and surrounding streets. Rideshare works cleanly here, no circling required.
Plan to arrive closer to 8 p.m. if you want a good spot. Zebulon's capacity means the floor fills up. The set starts four hours before midnight, which gives you time to settle in before the clock turns.
Why This Show
New Year's Eve in LA splits into two extremes: expensive hotel packages with open bars, or massive warehouse raves. This is neither. It's a real concert at a real venue with one of the architects of electronic music, for $32 presale.
If you care about where the sounds you hear in clubs actually came from, seeing The Egyptian Lover in a 200-person room is the answer to that question.
