iKeda at The Echo: PBW & Perfectly Imperfect

iKeda plays The Echo on Monday, October 26, in a show presented by PBW and Perfectly Imperfect. She's a British singer and producer with a sound she calls "bubble riddim." If most of the LA EDM events on your calendar lean toward big-room drops and long DJ sets, this is a different kind of night out. It's a Monday, it's a small club on Sunset, and the headliner is still early in her run.

Who is iKeda

iKeda is half-Jamaican. She told The FADER in a July interview that she draws on Jamaican dancehall and classic reggae, and that another part of her is "so obsessed with electro-pop." Bubble riddim is her name for the place where those two meet. She pointed back to roughly 2010 to 2012, when German and Dutch producers and Major Lazer were cutting records with dancehall artists. The FADER compared her to Santigold and M.I.A., then said the blend is her own.

Her first EP was Pretty Little Problem. The follow-up, Bangs N Braces, was due out August 28. She said the title comes from her habit of wearing shorts with braces (suspenders, to Americans) and a thick fringe, with a nod to bangers. A lot of the new material borrows nursery-rhyme melodies and runs them over loud, bassy samples. Her single "Go!" rides a beat from producer Tailtiu.

This year she opened for PinkPantheress on her European tour and worked in the studio with Oscar Scheller in New York.

What to expect

Ticketmaster files the night under dance/electronic, and so far the listing names iKeda as the only act. The venue says times and supporting acts can change without notice, so check again the week of the show.

The Echo is the street-level club on Sunset in Echo Park, upstairs from the Echoplex. It's a standing-room space, which suits a set built on dancehall rhythms, and nobody's far from the stage.
