Marcel Dettmann at Academy LA

Marcel Dettmann plays Academy Nightclub on Saturday, September 19. He spent years as a resident at Berghain, and the sound he's associated with comes straight out of that room: hard, dry, metallic, built from drum machines rather than synth pads. Dettmann doesn't chase peaks. He sets a tempo, holds it, and lets pressure accumulate over an hour until the floor has nowhere to go but forward.

The bill under him is unusually strong for a club night at this price. Sol Ortega opens, Perel brings her own live-leaning take on melodic electronics, and John Bryars fills out the lineup. Doors at 10 PM, 21 and over, tickets from $23. That is cheap for a DJ of Dettmann's standing, and it will not stay available all week.

Academy is at 6021 Hollywood Blvd. The main room's low end is the reason techno bookings land here rather than at the smaller eastside spots, and Dettmann's records need that headroom to do anything. Expect the floor to be dense by midnight and to stay that way until close at 3 AM.

A few practical things. The B Line stops at Hollywood/Vine, a short walk east, and it runs late enough on Saturday to get you home. Rideshare pickup on Hollywood Blvd itself is a mess after 1 AM, so walk a block north to a residential street. Parking structures around the boulevard charge event rates on weekends. Bring a physical ID, because the door checks it properly.

If you're new to this corner of the scene, know what you're walking into. There are no vocal hooks and no singalongs. What you get is four hours of rhythm built to be danced to rather than watched, which is what makes Berlin techno translate so well to LA rooms. Among the raves Los Angeles puts on any given weekend, this is the one for people who came to move.
