Nocturnal is this weekend, and the first thing to be straight about is that it is not in Los Angeles. Glen Helen Regional Park sits at 2555 Glen Helen Pkwy in San Bernardino, roughly 60 to 70 miles east of downtown depending on where you start. That's a real drive, and on a Saturday afternoon with everyone else headed the same way it can stretch well past ninety minutes. It's still worth it. Insomniac has been running this thing since the 90s and it remains the longest running rave in the country, which puts it in a different category from most LA EDM events you'll find on a given weekend.

Saturday is day one. Gates open at 2pm, which means the afternoon sets happen in full daylight and heat, and the park does get hot out there in September. Bass, house, techno and trance all get their own real estate across the grounds, plus the art installations and costumed performers that give the festival its name. General admission starts at $119.99.

Getting there: take the I-10 east, then the I-215 north, and follow the signs off Glen Helen Parkway. Leave earlier than you think you need to. If you'd rather not fight the drive home at 2am, camping is on site and is honestly the better version of this experience, since day two picks right back up on Sunday. Bring more water than seems reasonable, closed shoes you can stand in for eight hours, and a layer for after sundown, because the temperature drop in the Inland Empire is no joke.

One more thing about day one: the campground fills fast, and arriving at 2pm versus 6pm is the difference between a shaded spot near your car and a long walk in the dark with a cooler. Cash still moves faster than card at some of the food vendors, and phone signal out there gets spotty once the crowd builds, so pick a meeting point with your group before you walk in. Nobody has ever regretted agreeing on a landmark in advance.

If you're staying closer to home instead, our EDM listings and the Los Angeles page have plenty of other things happening in Los Angeles this weekend. But for one night, driving east is the move.
