Off Sunset: AJELAM and Kallitechnis at The Holloway

Off Sunset is back at The Holloway on Saturday, October 3, and the door is free with an RSVP. Please & Thank You runs the night, and this round the booth goes to AJELAM and Kallitechnis. If you're sorting through LA events this weekend and want a small bar over a big production, this one is an easy call.

Who's on the decks

The Posh listing sums up the night in three words: "Alternative Black Music." AJELAM and Kallitechnis split the four hours between them. The promoters get more specific in their genre list, which runs from Future R&B and Jersey club to Miami bass, Black house and Baile Funk, with R&B edits and deep cuts mixed in. Their words: sounds you won't hear at every other party.

That's a different lane from most LA EDM events, which lean on big-room house or peak-time techno. Jersey club is fast and bouncy, built on a stuttering kick pattern that makes people jump. Baile Funk comes out of Rio with heavy tamborzao drums. Drop either one next to a slowed-down R&B flip and the mood of the room can swing hard inside an hour.

What the night feels like

Please & Thank You describes the party as a good time at a good place with good people. They're also upfront that not everyone shows up to dance. Some come to talk, and some come just to listen. So picture a neighborhood bar with a sharp DJ booking, not a warehouse with a laser rig.

The name is literal. The Holloway sits on Echo Park Ave, up the hill from Sunset Boulevard, so you're just off the main drag. It follows an Off Sunset at the same bar on September 26, so if you missed that one, this is your second shot.

One thing to know before you click through: the long description on Posh still carries the old September 26 date, left over from the earlier listing. The event title, the short description and the flyer all say October 3.

Street parking around Echo Park Ave fills up fast on a Saturday night, and the side streets are steep. A rideshare drop-off out front saves you the circling. The promoters' own advice is to come early and stay late, and with a free door at a small bar, that's the right move.
