Old Town Lovers is a night built around records your grandparents might have slow danced to. DJ IMANNI curates it through her sound hub, Lofty.FM, and she is billing it as an oldies listening experience rather than a standard club night. It lands at Hello Stranger in Downtown LA on Thursday, November 5, and it is one of the more unusual things happening in Los Angeles this week.

When: Thursday, November 5, 8 PM to 11 PM Where: Hello Stranger, 320 E 2nd St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Tickets: $22.99 through Posh

What to expect

The playlist leans on the sounds of the 1950s through the 1970s. Think Motown, doo-wops, funk, Chicano soul and the lowrider cruise classics that have soundtracked Southern California streets for decades. The organizers also say the night makes room for modern artists who reimagine that classic oldies sound, so the set should move between originals and newer takes on them.

The format matters here. A listening experience puts the music first. You are there to hear the records, sing along when a chorus hits and trade stories about who played them in your house growing up. That makes it a good fit for a first date, a night out with friends who do not want a loud dance floor, or anyone who simply wants to hear a well-chosen oldies set in a room built for it.

Old Town Lovers started in San Diego and is making its way across Southern California, so this Downtown stop is part of a growing run of dates. The branding, a rose and a disco ball, tells you the tone: romantic, a little glamorous and a little playful.

The venue and getting there

Hello Stranger is a bar and music room on 2nd Street at the edge of Little Tokyo. The neighborhood is easy to reach by Metro, with the Little Tokyo/Arts District station on the A and E lines a short walk away. Street parking nearby fills up on event nights, so plan on a paid lot or a rideshare if you are driving in.

Plan your night

Tickets are sold in advance through Posh at $22.99, and the event runs three hours, so arriving close to the 8 PM start means catching the full arc of the set. If you are building a week of upcoming events Los Angeles has on offer, a Thursday oldies night is a low-pressure way to start the weekend a day early. Dress however the music moves you: vintage, dressed up or just a good jacket.
