On Saturday, October 17, Zizou hosts a free night built around one of the stranger and more beloved records in South Asian dance music. Kuljit Bhamra MBE, a pioneer of UK bhangra, plays live electronic tabla in Los Angeles for the first time, and the evening runs from a conversation about the music straight into a dance floor. If you are collecting things to do in Los Angeles that cost nothing and still feel like an occasion, this one belongs on the list.
When: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM Where: Zizou, 2425 Daly Street, Los Angeles, California 90031 Price: Free, with limited space RSVP: Required for the Q&A, through DICE
The story behind Punjabi Disco
Forty years ago, Mohinder Kaur Bhamra and her son Kuljit recorded Punjabi Disco on an early drum machine and one of the first Roland synthesisers. They fused electronic music, disco, funk and traditional folk into what is described as the first British Asian electronic dance album. The record was long treated as a lost grail, then reissued last year to wide acclaim, including a Pitchfork Best New Reissue nod and spots on year-end lists from the Guardian and DJ Mag.
What the night looks like
The first part is a talk. Music historian Geeta Dayal sits down with Kuljit Bhamra, Piya Malik of Say She She, and Naya Beat's Filip Nikolic and Raghav Mani to trace how the album came together and how it was rediscovered. After that the room turns into a party, with Bhamra on live electronic tabla and DJ sets from Dino Soccio, Thomaas Banks, and Turbotito & Ragz.
Bhamra has more than 2,000 tracks to his name as a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, so expect tabla work that is both technical and playful. Naya Beat is presenting with In Sheeps Clothing, dublab and Zizou, a lineup of partners that points to a crowd of serious listeners who also like to dance. For anyone tracking EDM in Los Angeles beyond the usual club circuit, a night that links disco, folk and drum machines across four decades is a rare find.
Practical info
Admission is free, but space is limited, so arrive early and RSVP through the DICE page. The Q&A specifically requires an RSVP. The party runs until 2:00 AM, and the ticket page does not list an age limit, so check there before bringing anyone under 21. Zizou sits on Daly Street on the east side, close to Silver Lake. Street parking nearby fills up on a Saturday night, so a rideshare is the easier plan. Browse more nights in our Silver Lake guide or the full EDM category.
