Walker & Royce at Academy LA

Walker & Royce land at Academy Nightclub on Friday, September 18, and if you've spent any time with tech house over the last decade you already know the shape of their sets. Sam Walker and Gavin Royce built their name on tracks that put a bassline and a vocal hook where most producers put a drop. It's playful music. It also happens to work at 1 AM on a full floor, which is where this one is headed.

Doors open at 10 PM. Adam Auburn and Max Low handle support, so the early part of the night isn't filler, it's a proper warm-up that builds toward the headline slot instead of parking at peak volume from the first record. Tickets start at $35 and the show is 21 and over.

Academy sits at 6021 Hollywood Blvd, a block off the stretch of Hollywood that tourists walk during the day and an entirely different crowd takes over after dark. The main room is big without feeling cavernous, the sound system is tuned for low end, and the sightlines to the booth are good from most of the floor. If you've been to a warehouse party in the eastside industrial pockets, this is the polished counterpart: same music, better bathrooms.

Getting there is easiest on the B Line to Hollywood/Vine, roughly a five minute walk. Rideshare drop-offs back up badly on Hollywood Blvd after midnight, so have your driver take a side street. Street parking exists, but it's metered late and the structures nearby fill early on Friday nights. Plan for a line at the door around 11 PM, when most of the room shows up at once.

Dress code is club casual and enforced loosely. Bring ID. If you're mapping out LA EDM events for the weekend, this one runs until 3 AM, which leaves room for whatever comes after.

More on the neighborhood: Hollywood events. More like this: EDM in LA.
