Museums with room for kids
The California Science Center in Exposition Park has free general admission, and the Natural History Museum is next door. Griffith Observatory is free too, and its planetarium shows suit nearly any age. Weekends fill up, so go early.
Parks and shows
Griffith Park has a carousel and pony rides, and Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier is the classic beach day. In summer, city parks screen free outdoor movies, so bring a blanket and a jacket for the evening chill.
Kid-friendly musicals and community theater usually price children's seats lower. The listing shows the age cutoff, so check it before you book.
Spend the afternoon outside with outdoor events, or base the day in Santa Monica or Pasadena.
