Friday Fun at Madrona Marsh Preserve

If your preschooler asks a hundred questions about bugs, seeds and puddles, Friday Fun at Madrona Marsh Preserve is built for them. It's one of the easier things to do with kids LA families can put on the calendar: a two-hour morning session in Torrance, run every Friday, and the October 2 meeting is next up.

What Friday Fun Covers

The program is for children ages 3 to 6, and each kid comes with a parent or guardian. Sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon. The first hour happens indoors at the Nature Center, where the morning mixes storytime with a bit of science and an art project. The second hour moves outside for a walk on the Preserve itself.

Some weeks add something extra, like potting a plant to take home. You won't know ahead of time which week gets the bonus activity, so treat it as a nice surprise rather than the reason to go.

The staff and volunteers frame everything around respect for living things. Little kids get told why you don't pull up the plants or chase the birds, and they're shown what to look at instead. It's a gentle first lesson in taking care of a place.

Registration Matters Here

There's no charge to take part. The catch is space. Each session caps at 20 participants, and you have to register in advance by phone at (310) 782-3989. The line is answered Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so plan to call earlier in the week if you want the October 2 slot.

If something comes up and you can't make it, call back and cancel. With only 20 spots, a no-show means another family missed out.

Getting There

The Nature Center sits at 3201 Plaza del Amo in Torrance, in the South Bay. Arrive a few minutes early so your kid has time to settle in before storytime starts. Dress everyone for the outdoor half: closed-toe shoes, a hat, and clothes that can handle a little dirt.
