Every year on the second Saturday of December, the water at Marina del Rey turns into a floating light show. On December 12, 2026, the 64th annual Holiday Boat Parade returns to the harbor, and it is an easy pick for families looking for things to do with kids LA has on offer in the weeks before the holidays.

When: Saturday, December 12, 2026 (start time to be announced) Where: Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey Theme: Hollywood Under The Stars Tickets: The listing gives no price, so check the event page before you go

What to expect

Boat owners come up with their own ideas each year and cover their vessels in holiday lights and decorations that follow the theme. For 2026 that theme is "Hollywood Under The Stars." Many of the people on board dress in costume, dance, sing and play live music as they pass, so the parade is as much a show of personalities as it is of lights.

The organizers say the 2026 parade opens with a light show. The photo for this event shows how it looks after dark: strings of color reflected on the black water, with the shoreline glowing behind the boats.

Why it works for kids

Watching boats glide by is a good fit for young children. There is plenty to point at, the pace is slow, and nobody has to sit still for a stage performance. Bring a jacket, since the marina gets cold once the sun goes down, and plan to arrive early enough to claim a spot along the water.

The parade is supported by Cedars-Sinai Marina Hospital and local businesses, which is part of why it has lasted more than six decades.

Getting there

Burton Chace Park sits at the end of Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey. Parking near the water fills up on parade day, so build in extra time or look for a spot a few blocks away and walk in. The listing shows no set start time yet, so confirm details on the Discover Los Angeles page. If you are building a list of family events Los Angeles hosts this season, or just checking LA events this weekend lists a few weeks ahead, this one belongs near the top.
