A regular museum afternoon can be a lot. Bright lights, echoing voices, a line at every exhibit, somebody's toddler shrieking by the water table. For plenty of kids that's the fun part. For others it's the reason the family stopped going. Pretend City Children's Museum built Neurodivergent Family Night for that second group, and the next one lands on Tuesday, October 13.

If you keep a running list of things to do with kids LA families can actually relax at, this one earns a spot, even though it means a drive down to Irvine.

A Museum With the Volume Turned Down

Pretend City is a kid-sized town. There's a grocery store with its own checkout lane, an amphitheater and a building-block play area, all scaled so kids can play at being grown-ups. On family nights the museum describes the setting as sensory friendly and neuro-affirming. In practice that means the lights are dimmed, the exhibit sounds are switched off, and attendance is capped at 250 guests so the rooms don't fill up.

Staff keep a kit of supports on hand: noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, sunglasses and weighted materials. You don't need to bring your own, though a favorite comfort item never hurts.

Who It's For

The whole family is welcome, siblings included, and the museum says therapists can come along too. That matters more than it sounds. A session where your child's OT or behavior therapist sees how they handle a busy pretend grocery aisle gives them something real to work with at the next appointment.

The museum also posts a social story on its website, a short illustrated walkthrough of the space. Reading it together a few days before helps kids with sensory processing differences, autism or developmental delays know what's coming when they walk in. Community partners and organizations sometimes set up on site, so check the museum calendar for who's attending.

Plan Ahead

Registration is required, and the museum opens it two weeks before each night. With a 250-person cap, don't wait until the afternoon of. The museum lists these nights as free, running 5 to 7 p.m., after general admission closes, on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of every month. If October 13 doesn't work, there's another date soon after.

The museum also offers birthday parties on these nights: a private room for two and a half hours, up to 25 guests, booked at least two weeks out.

Getting There

Pretend City sits in an Irvine business park, so parking is easier than at most family events Los Angeles puts on. From central LA, give yourself extra time on the 5 or the 405 on a weeknight; a 5 p.m. start collides with rush hour. Aim to arrive a little early so nobody starts the night rushed.
