Pretend City Children's Museum in Irvine turns the volume down for Neurodivergent Family Night, a free evening built around kids who find a typical museum visit too loud, bright or crowded. If you are collecting things to do with kids LA and Orange County families can actually enjoy without overload, this one is designed with that in mind. The November 19 date is listed on the LA Parent calendar.

When: Thursday, November 19, 2026 (confirm hours with the museum) Where: Pretend City Children's Museum, 29 Hubble, Irvine, CA 92618 Price: Free, registration required

What to expect

The museum describes these nights as a sensory-friendly, neuro-affirming environment where children and caretakers are invited to play together. Therapists are welcome to come along too, so the whole circle of support can share the space.

According to the museum, the evenings run after general admission closes. Staff dim the lights, turn off sounds and cap attendance at 250 guests, which keeps the floor calmer than a regular day. Helpful gear is available on request, including noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, sunglasses and weighted materials. Community partners and organizations sometimes set up on site, and the museum's calendar shows who is attending.

Pretend City is a kid-sized town where children role-play grocery shoppers, doctors, builders and more, so the play itself is open-ended and easy to do at your own pace.

Before you go

Registration is required and opens two weeks before each event, so mark your calendar for early November. The museum also publishes a social story, a picture-based preview of the visit. It helps children know what they will see and do, which can ease anxiety, and it is especially useful for kids with sensory processing differences, autism or developmental delays. Reading it together a few days ahead is a simple way to prepare.

The museum's published schedule for these nights is the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of each month, and November 19 is the date on the listing we found. Because of that mismatch, confirm the date and start time on the museum's own calendar or by emailing g2g@pretendcity.org before you plan your evening.

Pack what makes your child comfortable, such as a favorite snack or comfort item, and plan to leave whenever it feels right. Nobody here is on a clock.

Why it matters

Plenty of family events Los Angeles parents hear about assume a child who can handle crowds and noise. This evening flips that assumption, and it is free, which removes one more barrier. Browse more in our family category, or see what else is going on around Los Angeles.
