Small Group Storytime is on again at the Porter Ranch Branch Library on Wednesday, October 14. It's the same low-key format the branch has been running on Wednesdays this fall: a stack of picture books, a couple of songs, and a group small enough that every kid gets noticed. If you're hunting for things to do with kids LA parents can slot into a regular weekday, this is about as easy as it gets.
The session is listed on the L.A. Parent events calendar. Porter Ranch is a Los Angeles Public Library branch in the far northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley, up against the foothills north of Northridge.
Why the Small Group Part Matters
Big storytimes are fun, but they're loud. Twenty-five toddlers on one rug means the librarian mostly reads at the room. With a smaller circle, there's time to stop on a page and ask who spotted the cat hiding behind the fence, then actually wait for the answer. Quieter kids tend to open up in that setting. So do kids who are new to groups at all.
By mid-October a lot of families have come a few weeks running. That repetition helps. Little ones start to know the opening song, and they'll sit a bit longer each time because they know what's coming.
It's the middle of fall, too, so don't be surprised if a Halloween-adjacent book about a friendly ghost or a lost pumpkin shows up. The branch hasn't posted the actual book list, though.
Before You Go
The listing has the date and the branch. It doesn't list a start time, an age range, a price or registration details. Most library storytimes cost nothing, but we couldn't confirm that for this one. Check the L.A. Parent listing or call the branch before you head out. A small group can fill up fast, so arriving early is smart.
Some practical stuff:
- Bring a library card if you have one. The kids' shelves are right there afterward.
- Keep snacks packed until the last song.
- If your toddler needs to wander, sit near the edge. Nobody will mind.
Getting There
Most people drive, and the parking lot fills up when a kids' program is running, so give yourself a few extra minutes. If you're coming by bus, look up the branch on the LAPL website and plan a Metro route from there.
More Ideas for the Week
Our family events page keeps a running list of puppet shows, museum days and weekend festivals, a good place to look for family events Los Angeles parents can plan around. For kids activities LA has in other parts of town, see the Los Angeles page. And if October 14 doesn't work, the branch has been running this storytime on other Wednesdays too, so there's likely another one coming.
