Wednesday, October 7 brings another round of Small Group Storytime to the Porter Ranch Branch Library. If your kid had fun at last week's session, the same format is back: a few picture books, some songs, and a circle small enough that everyone gets a turn. It's one of the easier things to do with kids LA families can fit into the middle of a week.

The program is listed on the L.A. Parent events calendar. Porter Ranch is part of the Los Angeles Public Library system and sits up in the northwest Valley, close to the hills above Northridge and Granada Hills.

A Weekly Habit Worth Building

Storytime works best when it's routine. Toddlers love knowing what comes next, and by the second or third week a lot of them start calling out the refrain of a favorite song before the librarian gets there. Coming back on consecutive Wednesdays helps that happen.

The small group size is the point. With fewer kids on the rug, the librarian can pause on a page and actually wait for answers. What color is the bus? How many ducks are left? A shy three-year-old has a real shot at getting a word in, which isn't true at the packed weekend sessions.

Early October is also a good stretch for picture books. Expect a pumpkin or falling-leaves title to sneak into the stack, though the library hasn't posted the lineup.

What to Know Before You Go

The listing gives the date and the branch. It doesn't list a start time, an age range, or a price, and it doesn't say whether you need to register. Library storytimes are usually free, but we couldn't confirm that for this one, so check the L.A. Parent listing or call the branch first. Small sessions can fill up, so showing up a little early makes sense.

A few tips from parents who do this regularly:

  • Leave the snacks in the bag until it's over.
  • Sit near the edge if your kid tends to wander. Nobody minds.
  • Stay afterward and let them pick a few books to check out.

Getting There

Most families drive to the Porter Ranch branch, and the lot can get busy when a kids' program is on. Give yourself an extra five minutes. Taking the bus? Look up the branch on the LAPL site and map a Metro route from there.

More Family Plans

Want to fill the rest of the week? Our family events page has puppet shows, museum days and weekend festivals, a steady list of family events Los Angeles parents can plan around. For more kids activities LA has across the city, check the Los Angeles page. For a four-year-old, a Wednesday morning with a new picture book and a few friends on the rug is a solid day out.
