Saturday's plans can be as simple as a dance break at the library. Zumba for Kids lands at the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library on September 26, and it's one of the easier things to do with kids LA has on the calendar that weekend. No recital, no gear list. Just music and a room full of kids trying to keep up.

The session turned up on the L.A. Parent events calendar, which is where a lot of neighborhood library programs get their widest audience. Mid-Valley is one of the Los Angeles Public Library's regional branches up in the San Fernando Valley, so it's bigger than your typical corner branch and tends to run a steady mix of storytimes, crafts and movement classes.

What Zumba for Kids Looks Like

If you haven't seen a kids' Zumba class, picture a follow-the-leader dance party. An instructor up front runs through short routines set to Latin and pop tracks, and the kids copy the moves. Steps repeat a lot, so even the shy ones usually catch on by the second song. Nobody's grading footwork.

It's real exercise, too. Twenty minutes of hopping, spinning and clapping will burn off a surprising amount of energy, which parents of preschoolers tend to appreciate around nap time.

Before You Go

The listing gives the date and the venue but doesn't spell out a start time, an age range or whether sign-up is needed. Check the L.A. Parent listing or call the branch before you head out. Library programs sometimes cap the room size, so arriving a little early doesn't hurt.

Dress the kids in sneakers and clothes they can move in. Bring a water bottle for each of them, because they'll want it after the first few songs. Grown-ups are welcome to jump in, and honestly the kids think it's funnier when you do.

Since you're already at the library, plan a few extra minutes afterward. Let everyone cool down in the children's section and check out a stack of picture books for the week. It turns a short class into a full morning out without spending anything extra on activities.

Getting There

Mid-Valley sits in North Hills, in the middle of the Valley, and it's an easy drive from Van Nuys, Panorama City, Granada Hills and Northridge. Most visitors drive in, and a popular Saturday program can make parking tighter than usual. If you're taking Metro, look up the branch on the LAPL website and plan your bus route from there.

Most of what lands there is picked because it's easy to show up for, and a kids' dance class at the neighborhood library fits that fine.
