Lawless Brewing Co. is doing Oktoberfest for the sixth year running, and it's one of the better things happening in Los Angeles this weekend if you like your beer with a side of sack racing. The North Hollywood brewery opens its doors on Saturday, September 26, and We Like L.A.'s weekend roundup lists the party running into Sunday, September 27 as well.
The brewery
Lawless calls itself "Craft Beer with an L.A. Attitude," and the brewing team leans on traditional technique while still chasing weird, unconventional batches. The taproom sits in the NoHo Arts District, about a block from Magnolia and Vineland, and it has a renovated patio of roughly 500 square feet. That patio is where a lot of the Oktoberfest action ends up.
What's on
The lineup is simple and a little ridiculous, which is the point. Here's what the listing promises:
- Beer. Lawless's own award-winning craft beer, plus N/A beer for drivers and anyone taking it easy.
- Food. Bavarian food trucks parked outside, and pretzels from Shappy's Pretzels.
- Stein holding contests. Hold a full mug straight out in front of you. Last arm standing wins.
- Fest-Lympics. Put a team together for sack racing, a sausage toss and a keg roll.
Costumes are "highly encouraged," so dig out the lederhosen or the dirndl you wore once in 2019. Kids and dogs are welcome too, which makes this easier to pitch to a whole household than most beer-centric LA events this weekend.
Price and timing
We Like L.A. describes it as a free community celebration. Lawless hasn't posted its own price or a schedule for the contests on its site, so we're not listing a ticket price here. Check the brewery's socials before you go if you want to catch the keg roll. The brewery's regular hours are noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Those are normal taproom hours, not confirmed festival hours.
Getting there
Lawless lists its address as 5275 Craner Ave., North Hollywood, CA 91601. The Metro B Line's North Hollywood station is the closest rail stop, and it's a short ride or a longer walk from there. Take the train or a rideshare if you're planning to enter the stein contest. Otherwise, count on street parking around the arts district, and on it filling up by mid-afternoon on a Saturday.
Why go
Plenty of places throw an Oktoberfest party. Most of them charge a cover and hand you a plastic cup. This one is a neighborhood brewery that's been doing it long enough to reach year six, with games dumb enough that your friends will film them. If you're sorting through things to do in Los Angeles before the month runs out, it's an easy pick for a sunny Saturday in the Valley.
