Vintage Wine and Spirits

Vintage Wine and Spirits is a liquor store on Saticoy Street in Lake Balboa, and on Saturday, October 3, it's turning into a beer festival for the evening. Doors open at 5 p.m. If you're scrolling through things happening in Los Angeles that first weekend of October and want something smaller than a stadium-sized Oktoberfest, this is a good one to know about.

The format is simple. You buy a ticket, you walk in, and you sample from a long table of breweries. No stage lineup, no VIP cabanas. It's a tasting night at a shop that already knows its beer.

Who's pouring

The confirmed list leans heavily on Southern California, which is the fun part. Smog City and Beachwood are both well-known names in LA County craft beer. San Fernando Brewing and 8one8 are Valley breweries, so you're drinking close to home. Tarantula Hill, Dust Bowl, Chapman, Moonlight and TDNE round out the smaller and regional side.

A few bigger labels are on the list too. Stone is here, and so is North Coast from up in Fort Bragg. Cellador is the one sour fans should look for; it's known for barrel-aged, wild-fermented beers. And there's Duchesse de Bourgogne, the Flemish red ale from Belgium, which is a nice curveball if you've never tried one.

That's thirteen pourers for one evening, so pace yourself. Eat something first.

Time and tickets

The organizer's flyer lists the festival as running from 5 to 9 p.m., while the written event description says 5 to 8 p.m. Plan on arriving early rather than late and you won't have to sort out which is right.

Eventbrite's listing shows tickets at $23.17. The flyer itself advertises a $19.99 ticket price, so the checkout total may land a little higher than the headline number. This one is strictly 21 and over, and you'll need a valid ID at the door.

If you're filling out a list of LA events this weekend and want one that won't eat your whole Saturday, a three- or four-hour tasting in the Valley fits nicely.

Getting there

The shop's address is 16938 Saticoy St, Lake Balboa, CA 91406. Lake Balboa sits in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, a few minutes from the 405 and the 101. The listing doesn't mention parking, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot.

You're drinking, so get a ride home. A rideshare from anywhere in the Valley is a short trip, and it beats driving after a dozen samples.
