Kiwanis Club of Monrovia

Monrovia's Old Town is already one of the better walking streets in the San Gabriel Valley, and once a year the Kiwanis Club of Monrovia shuts down Myrtle Avenue and turns it into one long tasting line. A Taste of Old Town Monrovia hits its 11th year on Sunday, October 25, and it's a solid pick if you're hunting through LA food festivals for something that feels like a neighborhood party instead of a stadium parking lot.

What you're eating (and drinking)

The vendor list runs past 50 names, and most of them are places you can walk to the next day. Expect tacos from Baja Mar Fish Taco and Tacos & Papas, Thai from Kin Khao, Korean from KBOP, and pizza from three different shops (Alitalia, Pie Life and Zelo Gourmet). BBQ Blues and Stinkin Crawfish cover the messier end. Dessert gets its own lane: Matthan's Ice Cream, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sweet Nothings Cake Shop and Dulce Cielo are all on the roster.

On the drinks side, Firestone Walker, Hop Secret and La Verne Brewing are pouring beer, PRP Wine International brings wine, and La Sexy Michelada is exactly what it sounds like. San Fernando Coffee Company is there for anyone who needs a reset halfway through.

Your ticket covers every tasting, plus a souvenir wine glass, a plate and a swag bag. That's the whole deal. No drink tickets to track.

The rest of the night

DJ Johnny Villa of Dance Syndicate handles music, and there's a free souvenir photo booth and ice sculptures scattered along the route. The organizers bill it as an evening under the stars, and the aerial shots from past years back that up: white tents, string lights and a packed street from end to end.

Every dollar of profit goes to youth programs the Kiwanis Club runs in Monrovia, so the $80 goes further than a standard restaurant crawl.

Getting there

Old Town's public lots are free, which is a rare thing to say about any of the upcoming events Los Angeles has on the calendar. They'll fill early on a night like this, though, so the organizers suggest Lyft or Uber. The Metro A Line's Monrovia station is about a half-mile south of Old Town, an easy walk if you'd rather skip driving after all those beer tastings.
