Lawry's has been serving prime rib in Beverly Hills since 1938, and for a few weeks this fall the dining room on La Cienega is putting its beef on a bun. The Baseman Meal is a collaboration with artist Gary Baseman and See's Candies, and it runs from September 30 through November 6. If you're hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that don't involve a ticket queue, this one is simple: book a table, eat a burger, dip your fries in a milkshake, and leave with a piece of art.
What's on the tray
The main event is a Prime Rib Burger, with the beef ground on site. That's a fun move from a restaurant best known for carving whole roasts tableside from silver carts. Fries come with it.
The shake is the part people will photograph. It's vanilla, topped with hot fudge and finished with See's Candies sprinkled over the top. Eater LA suggests dunking your fries in it, and honestly, that's the right call. Salty fries and a chocolate-heavy shake have always worked together.
Every diner also goes home with a print by Baseman. It's a nicer souvenir than a branded glass.
Who's behind it
You've probably seen Gary Baseman's work without knowing his name. He did the illustrations for the board game Cranium, and he created Teacher's Pet, the Emmy-winning animated series for ABC and Disney that later became a feature film. His art sits somewhere between pop culture and fine art, and he describes it as celebrating "the beauty of the bittersweetness of life." A burger-and-shake collab is a lighter outing for him, and the print is the piece you keep.
See's is an LA story too. Charles See founded the company here in 1921 with his wife Florence and his mother Mary, and See's still runs its original factory in Los Angeles. Putting its candy on a Lawry's shake is about as local a pairing as you'll find.
Price and timing
The Baseman Meal costs $79. It's a limited run, and November 6 is the last day. With more than five weeks on the calendar, it doesn't have to compete with your list of LA events this weekend, but don't wait until the final week if you want a Saturday table.
Eater's write-up doesn't say whether the meal is served at every seating or only at dinner, so ask when you reserve.
