Wednesday is an awkward night to plan around, which is why a good midweek deal is worth knowing about. Flavors From Afar on Hollywood Boulevard has reopened as a Pan African bistro and wine bar, and it launched a weekly series called Wined Down Wednesday to go with the new look. The next one lands on Wednesday, September 30. If you're hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that don't need a ticket or a plan made three weeks out, this one's easy.

What's new at Flavors From Afar

The restaurant announced on Instagram that it's back, now with a focused menu built around cooking traditions from across Africa. For this night, though, the wine list is the headline. Flavors From Afar has started an African natural wine program, and the flyer for the series pitches it as "wines you won't find anywhere else in Hollywood." Bottles from African producers still don't turn up on many LA bar lists, so that's a fair pitch.

The Wednesday deal

The pricing is simple, and it holds all day:

  • $10 glasses
  • A flight of four pours for $25
  • 25% off bottles

Start with the flight if African wine is new to you. Four pours let you compare styles side by side without committing to a whole bottle of something you've never heard of. If one wins you over, the bottle discount makes it an easier call to split one at the table.

Food on Wednesdays leans toward grazing. Charcuterie, cheese and crudité are on offer, all meant for pairing with whatever's in your glass.

Music after 5

Afrobeats plays through the day, and a DJ takes over from 5 to 10 p.m. That evening stretch is when the room should feel most like a night out, so aim for it if you want the music. Come earlier if you'd rather have a quiet glass and actually hear your friends talk.

Getting there

Flavors From Afar is at 5652 Hollywood Blvd. The Metro B Line's Hollywood/Western station is a short walk away, which beats circling the block for parking. The restaurant's post for the series lists hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Reservations are on OpenTable, and the restaurant says walk-ins are always welcome. Since the series is brand new, booking ahead for the DJ hours is the safer bet. There are no wristbands or tasting tickets like at the big LA food festivals, so you can decide at 6 p.m. that you're going.
