Above Pasadena, past where the switchbacks start to feel endless, the San Gabriel Mountains hide one of the most significant sites in the history of astronomy, and most Angelenos have never made the drive up.

What Is Mount Wilson Observatory?

Perched at 5,715 feet, Mount Wilson Observatory is a working astronomical research facility with a history that reshaped how humanity understands the universe. It was here, using the observatory's massive telescopes, that astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered the universe was expanding, one of the defining scientific findings of the 20th century.

The observatory grounds are free and open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm, and you can view the historic 100-inch telescope from the Visitors' Gallery without needing a reservation or ticket.

Why This Is Worth Knowing About

For a deeper visit, docent-led walking tours run Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1pm during spring and summer, taking you inside the observatory buildings and up close to the major telescopes, exclusive access you don't get just wandering the grounds on your own.

If you want the full experience, the observatory also runs public ticket nights, where you can actually look through the 60-inch or 100-inch telescope yourself, alongside "Hyper" nights that split time between both instruments. These sell out, so book ahead if a clear night up the mountain is the goal.

Practical Info

Cost: Free to visit the grounds and Visitors' Gallery; docent tours and ticketed telescope nights are priced separately.

Parking: A USFS Adventure Pass is required to park at the observatory, available online or at local outdoor retailers before you go.

Tour times: Docent-led tours run weekends at 11:30am and 1pm, spring through fall.

Navigation tip: Phone map apps can give incorrect directions up the mountain, check the observatory's own maps and directions page before you leave.

Getting there: This is a mountain drive from Pasadena via Angeles Crest Highway, budget around 45 minutes to an hour depending on where you're starting from, no transit option exists.

Mount Wilson isn't just a pretty overlook, it's a working piece of scientific history that fundamentally changed our understanding of the cosmos, sitting less than an hour from downtown LA and free to walk up to any day of the week. If you're looking for things to do in LA that most tourists skip entirely, this is it.
