PLAYGRND Series is taking over Academy LA on Sunday, October 18, and it isn't a typical Academy booking. The club on Hollywood Blvd usually runs big-room DJ nights, but this one is billed as "The Premier Hiphop and R&B Experience." It's a sing-along party, not a set you stand and watch. If you're sorting through things to do in Los Angeles on a mid-October Sunday, this is one of the few club events that starts before the sun goes down.

When and what

Doors open at 4 PM. That's early for a Hollywood club, and it changes the feel of the day: you can arrive in daylight, get through the door before the line builds, and still be home at a reasonable hour if Monday is a work day. The organizers pitch it as a crowd that knows the words, so expect the hooks to get shouted back at the DJ booth.

There's a dress theme, but it hadn't been announced when we checked Academy's event page. It's still listed as TBD, and the lineup is listed as TBA. Check the event page closer to the date before you pick an outfit. The organizers' own advice is to wear your flyest fit "or show some skin," so this isn't a jeans-and-sneakers crowd.

One more thing from the listing: the party is being filmed and photographed, and walking in counts as consent to show up in their photo and video content. If you'd rather stay off camera, plan around it.

Tickets and entry

Academy LA hadn't posted a ticket price on its event page when we looked, so we're not quoting one. Buy through the "Purchase Tickets" link on Academy's own page. The venue says it has no connection to StubHub, Vivid Seats, Eventbrite or other resellers, and tickets from those sites won't get you in. All sales are final.

It's strictly 21 and over, so bring a valid ID. Academy is also a cashless venue: credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay only. VIP tables are booked separately through the same page.

Getting there

Academy LA is at 6021 Hollywood Blvd. The Metro B Line stop at Hollywood/Vine is a short walk west, which saves you hunting for parking on the boulevard. If you're taking a rideshare home, walking a block off Hollywood Blvd for pickup usually beats waiting out front.

For more Sunday plans nearby, browse our Hollywood events and the rest of the nightlife listings. A 4 PM hip-hop and R&B party on a Sunday is one of the better Things Happening In Hollywood this October, and it gets you in and out before the boulevard's late-night crush.
