Rhythm & Brewed: R&B Cafe Experience at ORA CAFE

Rhythm & Brewed puts together cafe-format R&B listening events in LA, and the September 27 edition lands at ORA CAFE in the Crenshaw district. ORA is a cafe and event space on Degnan Boulevard that's part of the Leimert Park Village corridor, which has been a hub for Black arts and music in LA for decades.

The Format

Cafe-format music events mean closer, seated or loosely standing listening rather than a full dance floor setup. R&B and neo-soul in a cafe room is a different experience from the club configuration: lower volume headroom, more conversation between songs, better sight lines to the performers. These are typically intimate in size, which makes early ticket purchase worthwhile.

The Neighborhood

Degnan Blvd in Leimert Park is worth the trip on its own. The World Stage, a jazz education and performance space, is a block away. The 5th Street Dick's legacy is embedded in this corridor. ORA CAFE fits into that context as a newer addition to an older music neighborhood.

Tickets and Timing

Tickets are $23.39 through Posh, with a 9:00 PM start running into the late evening. Cafe-format rooms hold a fraction of what a club does, so these sell out on lead time rather than on the day. If the date is on your calendar, buying early is the difference between going and reading about it afterward. Arriving near doors is also worth it here in a way it isn't at a club night: seating and sight lines are finite, and the room's whole appeal is being close enough to hear the vocals without a PA pushing them at you.

ORA CAFE is at 4331 Degnan Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90008, in the Leimert Park Village. The Leimert Park station on the K Line is about a 5-minute walk. Street parking is available along Degnan and 43rd Place.
