Santa Anita Park opens its gates at 6 AM on Saturday, September 26 for another day of live thoroughbred racing in the San Gabriel Valley. Tucked against the base of the mountains in Arcadia, the track has been hosting races since 1934, and the setting hasn't lost its draw. The grandstand view of horses rounding the far turn with the San Gabriels as a backdrop is one of the better free sightlines in Southern California sports.
Admission starts at $21, which gets you into the grandstand. You can buy a racing form at the gate, grab a seat in the outdoor bleachers, or wander the grounds while keeping an eye on the tote board. The infield and paddock areas let you get close to the horses before each race, which is genuinely a different experience from watching on a screen.
The track runs turf and dirt races throughout the card. Turf sprints and longer route races tend to draw the bigger fields, and the paddock viewing period before each race gives you a chance to watch the horses being saddled and the jockeys getting their instructions. It's the part most casual fans skip, but it's also where you pick up the most useful information if you're betting.
Food and drink options are scattered throughout the facility, from the basic concession stands in the grandstand to the full-service Clockers' Corner restaurant, which has a patio directly overlooking the track. It fills up early on big race days, so plan accordingly.
Getting to Santa Anita by Metro is straightforward. The Gold Line stops at Arcadia Station, about a five-minute walk from the track entrance. Driving from central Los Angeles takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and the park has its own large parking lot. On a race day that doesn't feature a major stakes event, parking and the approach roads stay manageable.
The September meet typically features solid mid-level allowance and stakes racing as the calendar moves toward the fall championship season at other California tracks. Weekday and weekend cards both draw competitive fields, and the September weather in the San Gabriel Valley usually cooperates. Afternoons can run warm, but the mountain air and some shade in the grandstand make it comfortable.
If you haven't been to Santa Anita, this is an approachable way to go. The track doesn't require any experience with horse racing to have a good time. Pick up a program, watch a few races from the rail, make a small bet if you want to, and stay as long as the card holds your interest. The gates open at 6 AM for early morning training observation, though the racing program itself kicks off in the early afternoon.
