Akbar
Los Angeles, CA 90029
Akbar sits at 4356 W Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake. It calls itself everyone's favorite neighborhood hangout and dance bar. New owners Albert Loya and David LeBarron took over in late 2025 after twenty-seven years by founders Scott Craig and Peter Alexander. The queer vibe stays much the same. Anyone can walk in and stay. The building runs down the block. You step onto a big wooden dance floor inside.
Every night brings something different. Tuesday karaoke, Wednesday craft nights, Thursday themed parties and live acts. DJ sets cover house, techno, Hi-NRG, synth-pop and cumbia throughout the week. Funk That! spins disco and funk. Soundtrack Sundays plays cinematic sets. Free sodas pour for designated drivers. Trans guests get complimentary entry to select events.
The bar serves cocktails, beers and wine until two in the morning. No dress code exists on paper, and you can come as you are. Street parking lines the block on weekends. Metro stops two blocks east on Vermont Avenue. Akbar holds a spot on the Louis Vuitton City Guide list of queer leaders in the city. It survived the pandemic and keeps running as a pillar of the scene.
